Coin Show Market Recap:
Illinois Numismatic
Association Show, Tinley Park, IL, Sept 17 - 19: (Shared table
w/Emporium Currency) Sales were extremely good, with dealers and collectors
pursuing coins in the $200 to $5000 price range. As an exact polar opposite
to last years' "quiet" event this show was supercharged. The show was
crowded at all times. Selling for us was more than good in the areas of US type,
Proof US Type, and Seated material. Generic US gold was a virtual
"sellout". Buying coins was accomplished only by paying whatever the
dealers' ask price- in order to obtain anything new and exciting.
Ohio State Numismatic Association Show, Independence, OH, Oct 1 - 3: (Shared table w/Stateline Coin Exch.) It is remarkable how coin dealers with a good attitude can make a show fun, even though the show completely tanked. That was the case with this show. Thursday and Friday activity was exclusively dealer to dealer, with a lot of looking, but little trading. The catch phrase for the show was "next customer", albeit the entire aisle was empty anywhere nearby. The public attendance on Saturday was respectable, although buyers were very thin. Recent lackluster performance of generic gold set the trend for this event. We did manage to sell a few high priced specialty items in both currency and coins, which made our show a moderate success.
Michigan State Numismatic Society Show, Dearborn, MI, Nov 25 - 28: (no table) Gold set a new record high of around $1192/oz on Wednesday, the day before the show. The show opened to dealers on Thanksgiving day but was more subdued than in recent years, perhaps with many dealers holding inventory with a "wait and see" approach. On Friday gold opened down- at $1100/oz in London, then reclaimed ground to close around $1181/oz for the day, and for the weekend. Selling of generic US gold was very active with prices that appeared to adjust by the hour, nevertheless sell it did! Generic US gold was the hottest item throughout the show. We like seeing this, considering that $20 Saints and US gold type has always been an appealing aspect of US numismatics.
